From the rhythm of lagoons, and the energy of tropical rains, we now move to the calm serenity of forests and zen gardens. This piece, Gazing into the Temple Pond, was inspired by Eng Tow’s hours spent in quiet contemplation beside centuries-old ponds in Kyoto’s zen gardens and temples, during a fellowship there awarded by the Japan Foundation. The work is created on washi, or traditional Japanese paper made by the artist, with ink, collage and acrylic. The dark layers of translucent washi evoke the deep, tranquil waters of zen ponds, as well as their rich layers of history. Glimpses of red suggest the movement of brightly-coloured fish darting in the depths. Looking at the work, you might imagine yourself having a quiet moment of reflection by deep waters, and feeling a sense of stillness and calm. In this same section, you will see another piece in Chinese ink, crayon, acrylic and collage using paper made by the artist, entitled Night in the Forest. This work invites the viewer to experience what darkness can reveal to us. Take your time to view more works in the artist’s ink series on these walls. When you are done, move to the large sculpture displayed at ground level, Rim of Infinity, for the next stop in your tour.
