Welcome to Eng Tow―the sixth sense. My name is Shujuan. I’m the curator for this segment and your guide.
Born in 1947, Eng Tow is an interdisciplinary Singaporean artist. Her work has garnered international acclaim, and spans nearly five decades to the present. It includes works in cloth, paper and mixed media, as well as three-dimensional works.
Eng Tow’s work is often described as contemplative, with an approach that is nuanced, subtle and evocative. Her art speaks of a deep connection with nature and finding inspiration in every changing moment of the day and night. Her works allude to the meditative, the curious or the ephemeral. Perhaps this is why many of her pieces have undefined borders or appear to levitate, leaving them open to various views and responses.
As you make your way through these works, we invite you to embark on a journey led by your intuition, emotions and memories. Feel free to take in each artwork slowly, and embrace your own thoughts and interpretations.
To the right are the first works in our tour, from the Aroma series. Inspired by the scents of Asia, the artist creates patinas made up of many layers of various colours. As your eyes and mind take in the different nuances of these hues, you may be perhaps reminded of the flavours of the East, and feel a sense of warmth, calm, familiarity or comfort.
After you’re done, move on to the wall on the [right/left]. Your tour will continue there.
