From 1867, during the colonial period, the British had appointed British Chief Justices. Since independence, Singapore has had four Asian Chief Justices. Wee Chong Jin was appointed Chief Justice of the State of Singapore in 1963, as Singapore merged with Malaya to form Malaysia. He was born in Georgetown, Penang in 1917, and became the first local member of the Singapore bar to be appointed a Puisne Judge at the relatively young age of 41. As Chief Justice, Wee Chong Jin served until 1990. Yong Pung How served in the role from 1990 to 2006, followed by Chan Sek Keong from 2006 to 2012. Sundaresh Menon is currently serving as Chief Justice, at the time of this recording.
