The artistic evolution of Singapore’s oldest living and active artist

The Gallery’s first solo exhibition on centenarian artist Lim Tze Peng features over 50 artworks from Singapore’s public art collection and his personal collection, including rare archival materials, dating from 1946 to 2023.

Discover the captivating story of Lim’s artistic evolution and his lifelong dedication to his craft. Immerse yourself in the nostalgic scenes of early Singapore in Lim’s well-loved paintings, including landmarks like the Singapore River, Kampong Glam and Chinatown. Lim also depicted magnificent landscapes from his art expeditions in Southeast Asia and the world beyond. He is also well-known for inventing his own distinct style of calligraphy, “hutuzi”. In 2003, Lim Tze Peng received the Cultural Medallion, Singapore’s highest arts accolade.

The exhibition includes sketches, calligraphy, and paintings in ink, and oil genres, dating back to his early artist days in 1946 to a recently completed work from 2023.

The public art collection works include National Collection works from The Istana, National Gallery Singapore, and Singapore Art Museum, as well as from institution lenders Chung Cheng High School (Main), Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and NUS Museum.
