When did photographs become art? Lee Sow Lim, Lee Lim, Lim Kwong Ling, and Tan Lip Seng were key to the development of modern photography in Singapore. Against the backdrop of rapid modernisation in the country, their works captured the city-state’s new landscape and national identity as Singapore moved towards independence after World War II.
The four photographers were prominent personages in influential members of various the dynamic photography clubs scene ofin the 1950s and 1960s. As educators, exhibition organisers, and salon jurors, they developed distinct photographic practices and contributed significantly to the recognition of photography as an art form.
