Step into a journey through time as Encik Awang, a fictional former caretaker of City Hall, brings the building’s rich history to life. In this online edition of the exhibition, follow his stories on the pivotal moments in Singapore’s past, from the swearing-in of the nation’s first president to the unveiling of the national flag and anthem in 1959.

Through Awang’s eyes, witness the transformation of City Hall from a seat of power to its present role as a wing of National Gallery Singapore.

In the aftermath of war, Singapore rebuilt itself from the rubble. Awang shares stories of the City Day celebrations and the pivotal moments that defined the early 1950s. As the city regained its footing, City Hall became a stage for hope and renewal, hosting moments of celebrations such as City Day.

Episode 5: A New Nation

The pivotal moment came in 1959, when Singapore became a self-governing state after years of negotiations with the British government.

On 5 June, Lee Kuan Yew, the Secretary-General of People’s Action Party, and his retinue of eight party members were sworn in as Singapore’s first cabinet of ministers in the City Hall Chamber. Through Awang’s memories, feel the anticipation and optimism of a people on the brink of change.

Spirits continued to soar in 1959 after Singapore attained self-governance. Yusof bin Ishak was inaugurated as the first Malayan-born Yang di-Pertuan Negara (“Head of State” in Malay).
