Jangan Tipu I is one of a pair of charcoal drawings made from photographs Kuik took during the Bersih 3.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2012. The negative drawing makes it harder for us to discern the details, although our attention is immediately drawn to the central figure staring back. Minstrel intended to highlight the presence of women who participated in the various social movements in the 2000s in Malaysia. Here, the figure is Teoh Lee Lan, the sister of deceased Teoh Beng Hock, a political secretary who died in custody while being questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in July 2009.
