The City Hall Chamber has hosted many significant events in Singapore’s history, such as the signing of the Japanese forces surrender document on 12 September 1945 and the swearing-in of Singapore’s first cabinet, including our country’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, on 5 June 1959, and first Yang di-Pertuan Negara (Head of State), Yusof Ishak.
The City Hall Chamber previously served as the Board Room of the Municipal Office, which was carefully located to be adequately shielded from traffic noise while allowing access to natural light from the courtyards on both sides.
Some of the Chamber’s key architectural features have been conserved, such as the Siena marble columns, and their bronze capitals.
