p/lay/ered ambience
p/lay/ered ambience is a collaborative presentation between the National Gallery Singapore—organiser of the annual Light to Night Festival—and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts School of Music. Directed by sound artist and lecturer Dayn Ng, these performances feature a multi-faceted sound design by Izharul Haq and Rebecca Tan, coupled with a live improvisatory acoustic performance by Alyssa Loh. Participation from members of the audience is solicited through playback of sound effects, crafted in response to various artworks from the Living Pictures: Photography in Southeast Asia exhibition.
Alyssa Loh is a composition major and violinist based in Singapore, currently in her final year of her diploma at NAFA. As a musician, she enjoys listening to works by 20th-century composers such as Shostakovich and Prokofiev. She also dabbles in film music. Her personal philosophy and goal as a composer is to create music that can heal, be it mentally or physically.
Dayn Ng Chee Yao is a recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council postgraduate international scholarship and graduated with Masters with Distinction in Music Production, Technology and Innovation at Berklee College of Music, Valencia. While studying, he was also the Composer-in-Residence for MUSA and Reverberance. He specialises in contemporary, jazz-influenced, film, videogame and electronic music, and was nominated for the Yayasan MENDAKI Anugerah Belia Cemerlang (ABC) Award for his excellence in music composition. He has collaborated with Tiny Jambit, the CJXT string quartet and the Aureum Saxophone Quartet from Austria, amongst others.
