Liu Kuo-Sung: Experimentation as Method
Liu Kuo-sung: Experimentation as Method is a major retrospective show that celebrates the ink master’s artistic career spanning 70 years, from the 1950s to 2020. With a selection of over 60 works tracing his creative evolution, the show highlights the artist’s significant innovations in modern chinese ink painting. His experiments in art go beyond the brush; Liu explored the materiality of ink and paper, guided by his own reading of Chinese art history beyond orthodox narratives. A display of selected archival materials complements the artworks and highlights the artist’s active engagement with Taiwan’s modern art movement from the 1950s to the 1960s, Hong Kong’s New Ink movement from the 1970s onwards, China’s New Wave avant-garde movement in the 1980s and global abstract art after World War II.
