Chapteh, Five Stones, kuti-kuti, gasing—these are all games that we know from our childhood. As an homage to our heritage and childhood memories, composer Tan Yuting chose the theme of games and playfulness when composing the set pieces for last year’s National Piano and Violin Competition. Featuring original poems by storyteller Rosemarie Somaiah, the pieces draw on the deeper lessons that can be learnt from each game. For example, in gasing, it is possible for one to spin out of control in life, but we can also choose to be grounded. With the game of Five Stones, we learn about loneliness and the importance of teamwork. The pieces will be performed by selected participants from the 2021 National Piano and Violin Competition.
