The UOB Southeast Asia Gallery is temporarily closed and will reopen in late 2027. In the meantime, works from the National Collection remain exhibited across the Gallery. 

Bringing together 20 artworks centring on Southeast Asia, this exhibition examines how artists work with archives to address forgotten, lesser known, or marginalised histories. At the same time, it opens up new possibilities for how these stories can be seen and understood from a contemporary perspective. The exhibition invites visitors to move beyond dominant narratives and to think of art as a record of history, and the artist as a storyteller of a shared past.

Rediscovering the past through art and memory

See how contemporary artists uncover overlooked stories, revisit existing records, and create new ways of remembering the past across photography, video, print, digital and technology-enabled mediums.

By giving these materials new meaning, the artists invite us to see Southeast Asia’s past from different perspectives, showing how remembering can also reshape the way history is understood today.

This booklet draws inspiration from Art Remembers, an exhibition on display at the Gallery from 21 Aug to 18 Oct 2026 that explores archives as living spaces where memories are preserved, revisited and reimagined. Featuring selected artworks from the Gallery’s refreshed long-term exhibition, Singapore Stories: Pathways and Detours in Art, this booklet invites readers to encounter the past through the perspectives of artist and writer Ian Tee. Through his reflections, readers are encouraged to consider how artists engage with art and archives as dynamic spaces for rethinking histories and shaping imagined futures.
