Resonates With Residency

This residency programme invites local performing artists to respond to works and themes from the Gallery’s long-term and special exhibitions.

Current artists in residence

Resonates With Residency showcases three artists, each commissioned to create a series of multi-disciplinary performances in response to the Gallery’s permanent exhibition, Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century.

Over the course of their residency, each artist will present two work-in-progress showcases, culminating in a final performance at Light to Night Singapore 2025.

a tree through time by Redwan Hamzah | WIP #1 Series

a tree through time is a work of music and movement that responds to the gazes, abstractions of culture and intermingling of myth and reality in Sudjojono's Perusing A Poster. Redwan Hamzah brings these elements into a different time and space in history by creating feedback-generating instruments from Jelutong wood and using these in conversation with elements of the performance space and the artist.

System Error: Please Check by Cheryl Ho | WIP #2 Series

System Error: Please Check is a slapstick and introspective look at the “unseen” forces working against our state of “being” and what we intentionally choose to let into our frame of consciousness. Performed in English and Singapore Sign Language with Open Captions.

Temporal Threads: Spill the Tea by Amin Alifin | WIP #2 Series

Temporal Threads: Spill the Tea is an immersive journey inspired by the paintings of Batik Variant Truntum II by Mochtar Apin and Flirting With the Jamu Lady by Sudjana Kerton. As the audience is drawn into a kaleidoscope of sonic and visual sensations, vibrant hues and intricate patterns merge and spill to form a mosaic of interconnected experiences. Themes of allure and inner strength intertwine, weaving a narrative of timeless resonance and transformative beauty.

kami, kamu by Redwan Hamzah | WIP #2 Series
Sat, 9 Nov | 2.30pm & 4pm

kami, kamu by Redwan Hamzah | WIP #2 Series

kami, kamu comprises three islands, each with a distinct musical landscape and a “traditional” musician that records input and configures the sound of their island. The piece allows audiences to observe the development of each “island” or to listen to and manipulate the collective composition of the archipelago, seeking a form of aesthetic balance in a dynamic dialogue with the unfolding of the piece.
